With the NFL trade deadline approaching on November 5, analysts and fans are speculating on the Detroit Lions’ potential moves. Head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes could have a surprise up their sleeves, particularly regarding the quarterback position.
Some experts believe the Lions might make an unexpected trade involving their quarterback lineup, potentially landing an experienced edge rusher in return.
In an October 25 feature, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report identified Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker as a trade possibility. Although Knox notes that the Lions “aren’t actively shopping Hooker,” the team might be open to offers, given that Hooker is primarily a backup behind starter Jared Goff, who recently signed a four-year extension. Knox suggests Cleveland as a possible destination, where Hooker’s potential might appeal to the Browns, who are currently facing challenges with their quarterback depth due to Deshaun Watson’s injury and his hefty cap hit.
Bleacher Report’s Derrik Klassen previously praised Hooker’s skills, saying he demonstrates “good velocity and ball placement,” making him a possible fit for Cleveland as they seek a fresh quarterback option. Additionally, Hooker’s minimal cap hit over the next two seasons makes him a budget-friendly choice for the Browns.
The Lions, in exchange, could pursue a pass rusher like Za’Darius Smith to support Aidan Hutchinson, who has been dealing with injury concerns.
However, not everyone believes a trade involving Hooker is imminent. Brad Berreman of SideLion Report argues that Hooker’s future in Detroit remains uncertain but that trading him now might not be the Lions’ best move. Given Goff’s recent contract extension and Hooker’s age as a rookie, Berreman believes the Lions may benefit from further developing Hooker rather than trading him prematurely.
