Dodgers Linked to Trade for $75 Million Star Pitcher

Fresh off their World Series win, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly interested in trading for St. Louis Cardinals’ ace Sonny Gray. MLB insider Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com has suggested that the Dodgers could be a potential landing spot for Gray, who inked a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals in November 2023.

Despite Gray’s recent signing, trade rumors have surfaced, with Adams noting that the Dodgers could be a logical fit. “With two years and $65 million remaining, Gray isn’t exactly a bargain,” Adams observed. “That’s likely more than he’d earn in free agency after a season with a 3.84 ERA across 166 1/3 innings, but his 30.3% strikeout and 5.8% walk rates are noteworthy. Teams with the budget and roster flexibility, like the Dodgers, Orioles, Giants, Rangers, and Tigers, could show interest.”

While the Dodgers aren’t the only team eyeing Gray, he could provide stability to a rotation plagued by injuries last season. Gray, a three-time All-Star, finished 2024 with a 13-9 record and a 3.84 ERA over 166.1 innings.

Gray’s No-Trade Clause

Even though trade discussions involve Gray, his full no-trade clause gives him control over any potential moves. However, Adams believes Gray might be open to joining a contender like the Dodgers. “Gray’s no-trade clause and backloaded contract complicate any deal,” Adams noted. “But, like Arenado, Gray is a veteran who signed with the Cardinals under the expectation of a playoff push. With St. Louis potentially shifting away from contention, he may be open to a trade.”

Bob Nightengale of USA Today also reported that the Cardinals may look to move Gray as they aim to cut payroll.

How Gray Fits into the Dodgers’ Rotation

The Dodgers dealt with multiple rotation injuries, forcing bullpen games in the postseason. Adding Gray would bolster their starting options, slotting him as a No. 3 starter behind Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in 2025, with Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, and Dustin May rounding out the rotation. Gray would bring depth and reliability, addressing potential injury issues.
