Breaking News: Tigers Trade Their Veteran Star $3.5 Million Salary Cap Space To Support Their Upcoming Roster Needs

The Detroit Red Wings have traded defenseman to the Utah Hockey Club, receiving a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange. This move creates a valuable roster spot for Detroit and frees up about $3.5 million in salary cap space to address future needs. Määttä, 30, has not registered any points in seven games this season, but last year he contributed 18 points (four goals and 14 assists) with a plus-14 rating over 72 games. Renowned for his defensive skills, Määttä has played 691 regular-season games in the NHL for teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, and the Red Wings. Drafted 22nd overall by Pittsburgh in 2012, he has also accumulated 27 points in 85 Stanley Cup Playoff games, adding a veteran presence to Utah’s defense.

For Detroit, this trade comes at a crucial time. Määttä’s exit enhances the team’s roster flexibility and cap space as they await the return of forward Tyler Motte from an upper-body injury. Motte has been out since October 17 but may be ready to play this weekend, which would strengthen Detroit’s forward lineup as they strive to remain competitive.

By trading Määttä, Detroit can continue to prioritize its young talent while keeping the door open for adjustments to meet other team needs in the near future.
