Garrett Dellinger’s injury raises concerns for LSU ahead of their game against Alabama. The Tigers’ offense struggled significantly in the second half of the Texas A&M game, contributing to their loss. This decline was partly due to Texas A&M’s adjustments and Garrett Nussmeier’s difficulties, but Dellinger’s injury also played a role.
Dellinger, the starting left guard, suffered a left ankle injury late in the second quarter and had to leave the game. His absence was a major setback, as he is known for his strong pass protection, and much of LSU’s rushing success has come when running behind both Dellinger and Will Campbell.
After Dellinger’s exit, redshirt freshman Paul Mubenga filled in for the remainder of the game.
On Tuesday, head coach Brian Kelly provided an update on Dellinger, noting that his injury is not expected to be long-term. With LSU having a bye week, Dellinger has some time to recover before facing Alabama. However, high ankle sprains can be unpredictable, with recovery varying from player to player and impacting different positions in unique ways. The bye week certainly improves Dellinger’s chances of returning for the Alabama game, but the true extent of his recovery will likely remain unclear until next week.
For LSU to succeed against Alabama, they will need a well-rounded offensive strategy, which starts with Dellinger and Campbell working together.
