The Hokies football team is set to welcome a transfer wide receiver from the Big Ten this weekend as they take on Georgia Tech. This weekend is significant for Virginia Tech, not only for the Homecoming game but also with several important recruits visiting campus.
Among these recruits is Donaven McCulley, a transfer from Indiana, who is exploring options for the 2025 season. McCulley entered the transfer portal in late September after his third game, where he recorded just two catches for 21 yards this season. However, he had a standout performance last season with 644 receiving yards on 48 receptions and six touchdowns, despite Indiana finishing with a 3-9 record.
Originally, McCulley planned to visit Michigan this weekend for their game against Michigan State but changed his plans to attend the Hokies’ game. This visit could have implications for Virginia Tech’s future, especially as they anticipate losing key wide receivers after this season. While they have Ayden Greene returning and some younger talent, securing a veteran like McCulley would be beneficial for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and head coach Brent Pry as they prepare for next year.
This isn’t McCulley’s first time in the transfer portal; he previously entered on November 27 but returned to Indiana two weeks later. With a new coach, Curt Cignetti, McCulley seems to have slipped down the depth chart, making this a crucial opportunity for Virginia Tech to enhance their receiving corps for next season.
