Just In: Detroit Tigers Head Coach Confirm A Deal Of A Top Veteran Star

The Tigers’ unexpected signing of Jack Flaherty last December raised some eyebrows. While they had shown significant interest in Kenta Maeda, Flaherty’s arrival was surprising, especially given his struggles since his standout 2019 season with the Cardinals.

However, Flaherty proved to be a key player for Detroit before his departure at the trade deadline, logging 106 2/3 innings with an impressive sub-3.00 ERA. The Tigers managed to revive his performance, which had diminished during his time with the Cardinals and Orioles. Now, he’s among the Dodgers’ primary starters as they pursue a World Series title.

Detroit may be looking to replicate that kind of unexpected signing this year. With a larger budget, the focus will primarily be on bolstering their pitching staff and rebuilding around Tarik Skubal. Cody Stavenhagen from The Athletic has highlighted three potential free agent targets: Walker Buehler, Andrew Heaney, and Luis Severino.

Buehler’s future with the Dodgers hinges on his performance during the World Series. Before the NLCS, it seemed likely he would leave, but a strong outing against the Mets might change that perspective. If he does become a free agent, his postseason showing could influence his market value, likely leading to a one-year deal or a one-year deal with an option for a second due to his injury history.

Heaney, who won the World Series with the Rangers last year, had a solid 2024 season, pitching 160 innings with a 4.28 ERA and staying healthy throughout. Severino, departing from the Mets, had his best year since 2018, avoiding injuries and even throwing a complete game shutout in August.

Each of these pitchers has their strengths and weaknesses, and while they may not offer long-term solutions, they are more feasible options for the Tigers compared to high-profile pitchers like Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, or Blake Snell, who would likely exceed Detroit’s budget.

While none of them are exactly positioned for a bounce-back season like Flaherty’s, with the right coaching adjustments, any of these players could significantly improve the team’s prospects compared to 2024.
