Three Mets players, including two acquired through trades with the Red Sox, choose to enter free agency.
Three New York Mets players have opted for free agency, including two acquired in trades with the Boston Red Sox. Minor league free agents can begin electing free agency ahead of the World Series, and on Tuesday, utility players Pablo Reyes and Eddy Alvarez, both traded from the Red Sox for cash, chose to explore other opportunities. Catcher Joe Hudson also joined them in seeking a new team.
Reyes, Alvarez, and Hudson were all emergency additions for the Mets. Reyes was acquired earlier in the season to provide depth when other options, like Zack Short and Joey Wendle, weren’t delivering. Alvarez, traded in September, primarily offered speed off the bench but wasn’t eligible for the playoffs. Reyes appeared in just one game without a plate appearance, while Alvarez went hitless in 11 at-bats but scored twice, including a notable run against the Blue Jays.
Hudson was brought in for catching depth during Francisco Alvarez’s absence and appeared in one game in June, when the Mets defeated the Cubs 11-1. His role was minimal, having also been on the taxi squad for the Mets’ London trip.
It’s no surprise that these three players have opted for free agency, as they seek new opportunities. Although their contributions were small, Mets fans hope these players don’t come back to haunt them in future matchups.
