The Detroit Lions may need to trade for a pass-rusher after their 31-29 win over the Minnesota Vikings, where the defense managed four sacks and 15 pressures despite losing star Aidan Hutchinson to a season-ending injury. While the defense performed admirably, it lacks Hutchinson’s game-changing presence. Head coach Dan Campbell praised his team’s effort but acknowledged the need for more consistent pressure, especially with blitzes.
Per Next Gen Stats, the Lions blitzed on 57.1% of Sam Darnold’s dropbacks, their highest rate since 2021. However, without blitzing, Detroit’s edge-rushers only generated three pressures on 27 pass rushes. This highlights the need for additional help on the defensive line, especially with a shift to more man coverage, which has been successful for Detroit.
Considering their strong offense led by quarterback Jared Goff, now might be the time to add an edge rusher before the November 5 trade deadline. Potential targets include Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals, who had 20 sacks last season and remains productive this year with seven sacks and 35 pressures. While Hendrickson would be a great complement to Hutchinson in the future, his age and contract would likely require a front-loaded deal.
Another option is Za’Darius Smith of the Cleveland Browns, a versatile veteran with four sacks and 15 pressures this season. Smith’s hybrid ability to disrupt both inside and outside makes him valuable, and he could fit well in Detroit’s defensive schemes.
A third candidate is Azeez Ojulari of the New York Giants, a younger player who has shown flashes of his potential despite injuries. Ojulari has five sacks and 15 pressures this season, making him an intriguing option if the Giants decide to move on from him amid their struggles.
Acquiring any of these players would strengthen Detroit’s pass rush and help the team maintain its momentum, particularly with the offense playing at a high level.
