Russell Wilson sent a message to Justin Fields after winning his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin faced criticism leading up to Sunday’s game against the New York Jets for benching Justin Fields in favor of Wilson, who hadn’t played since last season. Tomlin explained to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer that the decision was his way of evaluating both quarterbacks before the postseason. Wilson justified the move, leading the Steelers to a 37-15 victory on “Sunday Night Football.” Despite now being the starter, Wilson took a moment to praise Fields for leading the team to a 4-2 record. In an interview with NBC Sports’ Melissa Starks, Wilson said, “I want to give credit to Justin for getting us in this position. What a great player he is.”

Fields had thrown for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception in his six starts, while rushing for an additional 231 yards and five touchdowns. However, he only surpassed 200 passing yards in two of those games. In contrast, Wilson threw for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and added a rushing score in his first start. George Pickens also had his best game of the season, catching five passes for 111 yards and scoring his first touchdown. The Steelers, who were ranked 24th in total offense and 22nd in scoring, hit new season highs with 409 total yards and 37 points under Wilson’s leadership.
