Phillies running for four-time All-Star top-billed free agent. could he what we need now?

The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be one of the top contenders for free agent Juan Soto this offseason. Soto, a four-time All-Star at just 25, is likely to command a massive contract, potentially exceeding Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal. While the Phillies desperately need outfield help, it’s hard to imagine them spending such a huge sum. Despite owner John Middleton’s willingness to spend and Dave Dombrowski’s history of bold moves, the team may ultimately be priced out of the Soto sweepstakes. With that in mind, here are three backup options the Phillies could consider:

3. Tyler O’Neill
O’Neill, who excelled against left-handed pitching for the Boston Red Sox, is an ideal fit for the Phillies’ needs. He posted a .241/.336/.511 line with 31 home runs, including a 1.179 OPS against lefties. At 29, O’Neill could bring the right-handed power Philadelphia lacks, and his price should be within reach. If he stays healthy, O’Neill could be a key long-term addition to the Phillies lineup.

2. Anthony Santander
Santander is coming off a career-best season for the Baltimore Orioles, with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs, earning his first All-Star appearance. A switch-hitter, Santander is stronger against righties but still better against lefties than current Phillies options like Brandon Marsh. The biggest issue is his defensive limitations, as the Phillies already struggle with fielding in the outfield. However, Santander’s offensive firepower would be a significant boost for the lineup.

Juan Soto, Bryce Harper

1. Luis Robert Jr.
The Phillies were linked to White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. at the trade deadline and could pursue him again. Despite a down season due to a hip injury, Robert has shown All-Star potential, hitting 38 home runs in 2023. A trade for Robert could give the Phillies a dynamic presence in center field, ending the Johan Rojas experiment. While a trade would require a significant prospect package, Robert offers team-friendly contract options and long-term control, making him an appealing alternative to Soto.
