ESPN College Football analyst Sam Acho believes Alabama’s defense requires “significant improvement” if the team hopes to be a contender in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Another national media figure is also raising concerns about Alabama’s defense.
Acho highlighted that Alabama’s defensive performance has been underwhelming, starting with the second half against Georgia, where they allowed 27 points. The Crimson Tide then gave up 40 points in a loss to Vanderbilt and 25 points in a close win over South Carolina. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack recognizes the issues, but it’s uncertain if he can fix them in time. Alabama is set to face quarterback Nico Iamaleava and the Tennessee Volunteers this weekend in Knoxville.
Reflecting on the Tide’s struggles, Acho stated, “We saw Alabama’s defense collapse in the second half against Georgia. They didn’t perform well against Vanderbilt, and the trend continued with South Carolina. The defense must improve significantly if they want to compete for an SEC title. The margins at the top, especially in the SEC, are very small.”
