Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick humorously reflected on his brief stints as head coach of the New York Jets during his appearance on ESPN’s Manningcast for Monday Night Football. Peyton Manning brought up Belichick’s famous resignation from the Jets in 1999, when he wrote on a napkin, “I resign as HC of the NYJ.” Manning jokingly asked if the odd part was using a napkin or abbreviating “head coach.”
Belichick, laughing, replied, “I was tight on space.”
Belichick was named Jets head coach after Bill Parcells stepped down in 1999 but resigned the next day. This was actually his second time in the role, as he briefly served as interim coach in 1997 during negotiations to hire Parcells from the Patriots. Belichick poked fun at his undefeated record as Jets coach, saying, “I was the head coach of the Jets twice … Undefeated, unscored on. My career as the coach of the Jets is unblemished.”
He also took the opportunity to criticize the Jets’ decision-making, referencing their struggles and calling out the ownership’s approach, saying, “That’s kind of what it’s been there at the Jets … barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ‘Ready, fire, aim.'”
