Phillies’ top pitching prospect Andrew Painter made his highly anticipated return to game action on Saturday in the Arizona Fall League, throwing 29 pitches over two innings. The 21-year-old showcased his velocity, reaching triple digits with his fastball, allowing two runs, and striking out two batters.
Painter’s first pitch clocked in at 98 mph, and he hit 100 mph several times during the first inning, where he retired Mets veteran Jeff McNeil and struck out Giants first-round pick Bryce Eldridge. McNeil, using the AFL to rehab a wrist injury, hopes to rejoin the Mets for the NLCS.
In the second inning, Painter gave up a home run to Tigers catcher/first baseman Josue Briceño, walked the next batter, and allowed a single before inducing a double play. He later surrendered a two-out double but finished strong with a strikeout. Most importantly, Painter came out of the outing healthy.

Painter had injured his right elbow in March 2023 while competing for a spot in the Phillies’ rotation. At just 19, he was considered a strong contender for the No. 5 starter role before the injury. Initially, Painter and the Phillies opted for a conservative rehab approach, but he eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2023. The Phillies have been cautious with his recovery, targeting a full return by 2025. Painter could be in contention for a rotation spot in spring training if his health allows, although the Phillies may take a gradual approach to build up his stamina, given his limited experience in Double A and no Triple A appearances.
For now, the Phillies are thrilled to see this key part of their future back on the mound.
