The Illinois women’s basketball team secured a commitment from Class of 2025 forward Erica Finney, an Australian wing, on Thursday. Finney is the second player to commit to the Illini in the 2025 class, joining five-star guard Destiny Jackson. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and shot 35.9% from three-point range in the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup. Davidson and Cal were also contenders for Finney’s recruitment.
Head coach Shauna Green played a key role in developing a relationship with Finney, leading to her commitment. Finney is the second international player to join the Illini in recent classes, following Spanish forward Irene Noya Catoria from the Class of 2024.
What this means: Illinois will need to replace several key players after this season and has added another talented wing in Finney. She will join a roster featuring Berry Wallace (sophomore in 2025) and Gretchan Dolan (junior in 2025). With key players like Makira Cook, Genesis Bryant, Adalia McKenzie, Kendall Bostic, and Brynn Shoup-Hill graduating, the Illini are retooling their roster through recruiting and the transfer portal. Finney adds shooting ability and size on the wing.

Why it matters: Illinois is building around players like Wallace, Dolan, Jasmine Brown-Haggar, Shay Bollin, and incoming freshmen, including Jackson. Finney’s ability to fit into the Illini’s pro-style offense and stretch the floor makes her an important addition. The Illini are also pursuing other high school prospects such as Layla Hays (No. 58 per ESPN), Naomi Benson (No. 98), and Addi Mack (No. 100).
