Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule is gearing up for a challenging matchup against Rutgers, recognizing the unique difficulties posed by their style of play. Rutgers will head to Lincoln to face Nebraska in one of its toughest games of the season, and Rhule acknowledged that his team is in for a real test.
“It’s a whole different animal we’re facing this week with how they play,” Rhule said during his Monday press conference.
Nebraska improved to 4-1 after a 28-10 win over Purdue, while Rutgers remained undefeated following a victory against Washington. Both teams have significant challenges ahead, each with a distinct approach.
For Rutgers, they’ll face their most formidable quarterback yet in five-star recruit Dylan Raiola, while Nebraska will need to create opportunities against Rutgers’ tough defense. “Rutgers doesn’t give up explosive plays,” Rhule said. “They make you earn it. Coach (Greg) Schiano’s teams play solid, pressuring football, but they’re also rugged and disciplined in their approach.”
Rhule pointed out areas where Nebraska can improve, especially in the red zone and on third downs. Nebraska’s running backs, Emmett Johnson and Rahmir Johnson, have been crucial in pass protection, helping the team’s young quarterback make plays through the air.
Rhule also expressed admiration for Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, noting his ability to rebuild the program. “Not many can do what he’s done. Winning at Rutgers is a tough task, and he’s done it at a high level. I have immense respect for him,” Rhule said.
On Saturday, it will be a showdown between two coaches known for turning programs around, with both teams looking to test their limits.
