Four-star safety Demetres Samuel Jr. has switched his commitment from Florida back to Syracuse. Samuel, who plays for Palm Bay (Fla.) Heritage, had initially committed to Syracuse earlier in 2023 as part of the 2026 class before reclassifying to the 2025 class and flipping to Florida in late July after a successful visit to Gainesville. However, after visiting Syracuse this past weekend, he decided to recommit to the Orange.
Samuel originally pledged to Syracuse on March 30 as a 2026 recruit but flipped to Florida on July 31. His recent visit to Florida was for their season opener against Miami, and he had expressed interest in taking future visits. With Samuel’s departure, Florida now has no safeties committed in its 2025 recruiting class, which currently has 13 verbal commitments, including four-star prospects like wide receiver Vernell Brown III and edge rusher Jalen Wiggins.
Samuel is ranked as the No. 242 overall player and No. 21 safety in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports Composite.
