The New York Rangers could reunite with a beloved former player and bolster their defense in a proposed blockbuster trade. As the team remains in a Stanley Cup window, they are focused on strengthening their roster. Although a significant trade is unlikely before the deadline, one user on Heavy suggested a mock deal that would enhance the Rangers’ lineup just in time for the season.
In this hypothetical trade, the Rangers would send Kaapo Kakko, Ryan Lindgren, Jonny Brodzinski, and two draft picks (a first-rounder and a fifth-rounder in 2025) to the Minnesota Wild. Kakko, who has struggled during his tenure in New York, might be on his way out as the Rangers look to improve their third line. Lindgren, though harder to part with due to his solid play on the top defensive unit, carries injury concerns, making him a risk for the future.
In return, the Rangers would acquire elite defenseman Jonas Brodin and fan-favorite forward Mats Zuccarello, as well as a 2025 second-round draft pick. Zuccarello, now 37, enjoyed a successful season with 63 points in 69 games for Minnesota and would be a key addition to the Rangers’ third line. Brodin, a former top-10 pick, is a highly skilled defensive player who would represent a significant upgrade over Lindgren, strengthening New York’s blue line.
