Good News: Rangers Acquiring Star $57 Million Defenseman in Blockbuster

A trade proposal suggests the New York Rangers could acquire star defenseman  from the Columbus Blue Jackets, according to PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool. The proposed deal would have the Rangers receiving Werenski and forward Dmitri Voronkov, while the Blue Jackets would get Ryan Lindgren, Gabe Perreault, Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko, a 2025 first-round pick, and a 2026 third-round pick.

Werenski, entering the third year of a $57.5 million contract, would strengthen the Rangers’ defense, potentially replacing Jacob Trouba. Last season, Werenski scored 57 points in 70 games. Voronkov, coming off his rookie season with 34 points in 75 games, would likely serve as a middle-six forward for the Rangers.

In return, Columbus would receive top prospect Perreault, who had an impressive freshman season at Boston College, and young NHL players Lindgren, Chytil, and Kakko, who could benefit from a change of scenery and bigger roles with the Blue Jackets.

Despite trade rumors, the Rangers’ offseason has been quiet, with their biggest move being the acquisition of forward Reilly Smith from Pittsburgh. Smith, who had 40 points in 76 games last season, is expected to play in the Rangers’ top six. Trouba, despite speculation, remains on the roster for the upcoming season.
