Rangers GM Addresses Jacob Trouba Trade Rumors
This offseason, the New York Rangers and their captain, Jacob Trouba, were the center of trade speculation, particularly involving the Detroit Red Wings, as reported by the New York Post. However, general manager Chris Drury clarified that Trouba remains a key component of the Rangers’ plans for the upcoming season.
During a media session at training camp on September 17, Drury acknowledged the rumors without confirming any specific trade discussions. He highlighted the strong communication he maintained with Trouba over the summer, stating, “We’ve had a number of different conversations about a lot of different things. He knows where he stands with me, and I value him as both a player and a leader.”
Trouba’s substantial $8 million salary cap hit contributed to the trade speculation, as it significantly impacts New York’s salary cap space. While freeing up that cap room could have given Drury more flexibility to enhance the roster, the 30-year-old defenseman expressed a strong desire to remain in New York, supported by his 15-team no-trade list.
Ultimately, the Rangers opted to keep Trouba, whether due to a lack of suitable trade options or their preference to retain him. Drury expressed his satisfaction with having Trouba in the lineup, saying, “I think he’s done a really good job here as captain. There are so many moving parts that come with being a captain, especially in New York.”
“I’m excited to have him back for training camp. He had a terrific offseason training-wise.”
