Veteran defenseman has announced his retirement from the NHL after six seasons. Wideman, who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers, and Florida Panthers, shared the news today via the Montreal Canadiens’ social media page on X. Reflecting on his career, Wideman expressed gratitude for the journey that began at the age of three, noting that leaving the game with even more love than he started is his greatest achievement.
After considerable thought, Wideman stated that it was best for his health and family to step away from professional hockey. Despite numerous attempts at rehabilitation and treatment, he realized returning to the ice was no longer possible.
While the decision was tough, Wideman reflected on the privilege of living out his childhood dream of playing in the NHL. He recalled how his career, which began after leaving Miami University in 2012, brought both celebration and challenges. He thanked his family, especially his mother for instilling self-belief, and his wife Caroline, for her sacrifices and unwavering support.
Wideman also expressed deep appreciation for the entire hockey community, from coaches and volunteers to the support staff behind the scenes. He extended special thanks to the Canadiens organization and credited people like Scott Mellanby, Geoff and Kate Molson, and his agent Allain Roy for helping him return to the NHL after a season in Russia.
Skating at the Bell Centre in front of devoted fans was one of Wideman’s most cherished experiences. He closed by expressing his love for being part of a team, which he will miss the most. While unsure of his future, Wideman is confident he’ll find a way to stay connected to the game.
