The New York Rangers are adding some veteran depth for training camp by reportedly signing defenseman Madison Bowey to a professional tryout (PTO). The 29-year-old is returning to North America after spending last season in Russia’s KHL, where he recorded 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 51 games. Bowey has 158 NHL games under his belt but hasn’t played in the League since 2021-22, when he appeared in two games for the Vancouver Canucks. Over five NHL seasons, he’s accumulated 40 points (five goals, 35 assists) while playing for four different teams.
Bowey, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 207 pounds, was a second-round draft pick (53rd overall) by the Washington Capitals in 2013. His most productive season with them was as a rookie in 2017-18, when he contributed 12 assists in 51 games. After two seasons with Washington, Bowey played two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, recording an NHL career-high of 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 53 games during the 2019-20 season.
Having captained Kelowna to a Western Hockey League championship in 2014-15, Bowey spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons in the American Hockey League before heading to the KHL. He’s a right-shot defenseman, an area where the Rangers could use depth. Behind NHL regulars Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba, and Braden Schneider, veteran Chad Ruhwedel is currently the favorite to fill the extra defenseman spot.
The Rangers also added Casey Fitzgerald for depth on the right side, and 2022 draft pick Victor Mancini is poised to play his first full AHL season with the Hartford Wolf Pack. On the left side, the Rangers are more secure, with Ryan Lindgren, K’Andre Miller, and Zac Jones in the NHL, and Ben Harpur, Connor Mackey, Brandon Scanlin, and Matthew Robertson as additional options.
The Rangers are holding rookie camp this week, with training camp set to start next week. Their preseason schedule begins Sunday, Sept. 22, against the Boston Bruins, with their first home game on Tuesday, Sept. 24, against the Islanders at Madison Square Garden.
