LATEST UPDATE: Sharks confirms departure of top experienced player.

The New Jersey Devils are reportedly close to signing forward Kevin LaBanc to a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. According to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng, the former San Jose Sharks playoff hero is expected to join the Devils on a PTO, with New Jersey Hockey Now confirming the news through multiple sources.

LaBanc, a 28-year-old forward, is entering his ninth NHL season, assuming he secures a contract with the Devils. He had a tough season last year, recording just two goals and nine points in 46 games. After a breakout 2018-19 campaign in which he posted 17 goals and 56 points in 82 games, LaBanc signed a four-year deal with the Sharks, averaging $4.725 million annually. However, his production has declined since, with a maximum of 33 points in any of the subsequent five seasons.

Despite these struggles, LaBanc remains confident in his abilities. He told San Jose Hockey Now, “I still have a lot of confidence… however many minutes you play, you try to do what you can with the puck. Just work hard, throw the body, and do everything you can to get the team [going].”

LaBanc will now have a chance to impress at the Devils’ training camp and earn another NHL opportunity. He’ll reunite with former Sharks teammate Timo Meier, who was traded to the Devils. Playing closer to home, where his family resides in Staten Island, could provide a boost as LaBanc looks to regain his form.
