HUGE BOOST: Minnesota Wild re-signs $17.4 million defenceman to a four-year deal.

The idea of the Toronto Maple Leafs trading for Minnesota Wild defenseman Jake Middleton makes little sense from the Wild’s perspective. While the Maple Leafs have focused on improving their defense and goaltending this offseason, rumors suggest they are still looking to bolster their blue line. A fan-submitted trade proposal via PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool has sparked some discussion. The proposed deal would send Jake Middleton to the Leafs in exchange for Nick Robertson, Timothy Liljegren, and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

At first glance, this trade appears to favor Toronto. Middleton, a solid and reliable defenseman, would further strengthen their defense. However, the deal raises serious questions for Minnesota. Since being traded to the Wild in 2022, Middleton has developed into a key player for their defense, posting 25 points (7 goals, 18 assists) in 80 games last season. Known for his strong shutdown abilities, he has become a cornerstone of the Wild’s defensive identity, recently signing a four-year, $17.4 million contract extension.

On the other hand, Robertson, 22, is a talented winger with potential but has struggled with injuries and limited opportunities. He’s requested a trade to seek a bigger role elsewhere. Liljegren, 25, a former first-round pick, has shown promise but has yet to secure a top-four defenseman role in Toronto. While these players have upside, they do not fill the immediate needs of the Wild, especially at the cost of losing a crucial defenseman like Middleton.

For Minnesota, trading Middleton, a player who has thrived in their system and is under contract through 2028-29, would be difficult to justify. The Wild value Middleton highly, as evidenced by his recent extension and his expressed happiness with the team. Moving him would seem counterproductive, as it weakens a key part of their defense without offering a clear benefit in return.

While the trade could benefit the Maple Leafs by solidifying their blue line, it doesn’t make sense for the Wild to part with a player so integral to their future. Unless there are hidden factors, this trade proposal appears one-sided and unlikely to materialize.
