The New York Rangers are reportedly adding veteran depth to their training camp by signing defenseman Madison Bowey to a professional tryout (PTO) on Wednesday.
Bowey, 29, returns to North America after spending last season playing for three different teams in the KHL, where he recorded 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 51 games. He brings 158 games of NHL experience, although he hasn’t played in the league since the 2021-22 season, when he appeared in two games with the Vancouver Canucks. Over his five NHL seasons, Bowey has accumulated 40 points (five goals, 35 assists) while playing for four different teams.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 207 pounds, Bowey was drafted in the second round (53rd overall) by the Washington Capitals in 2013. His best season came during his rookie year in 2017-18 when he tallied 12 assists in 51 games for the Capitals. After two seasons with Washington, Bowey spent two more with the Detroit Red Wings, where he achieved a career-high 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 53 games during the 2019-20 season.
Before heading to Russia, Bowey primarily played in the AHL during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. He was also captain of the Kelowna Rockets in juniors, leading them to a WHL championship in 2014-15. A right-shot defenseman, Bowey could provide much-needed depth for the Rangers on the right side of their defense. The team’s NHL regulars on that side include Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba, and Braden Schneider. Behind them, the Rangers have Chad Ruhwedel, Casey Fitzgerald, and 2022 draft pick Victor Mancini, who will play his first full AHL season with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
On the left side, the Rangers are more secure, with Ryan Lindgren, K’Andre Miller, and Zac Jones leading the way. Depth options include Ben Harpur, Connor Mackey, and Brandon Scanlin, along with Matthew Robertson, a fourth-year pro and 2019 second-round pick.
The Rangers are holding rookie camp this week, with training camp starting next week. Their first preseason game is set for Sunday, Sept. 22, against the Boston Bruins, followed by their first home preseason game at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Sept. 24, against the Islanders.
