The New York Rangers have brought in forward Adam Erne on a professional tryout (PTO) for their upcoming training camp. TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to break the news on September 10, 2024.
Erne spent last season with the Edmonton Oilers organization, splitting his time between the NHL and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After joining Edmonton on a PTO, he secured a one-year deal and went on to play 24 games with the Oilers, tallying one goal and one assist. His lone goal came against the New Jersey Devils on December 21. Erne also played 36 games with the Condors, recording six goals and six assists, and appeared in two Calder Cup Playoff games.
Originally drafted 33rd overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2013, Erne has also spent time with the Detroit Red Wings. He became a regular NHL player following a 2019 trade to Detroit, where he played for four seasons. Across 379 NHL games, the 29-year-old winger has 43 goals and 50 assists, though his playoff experience is limited to three games during the Lightning’s 2019 postseason, where they were swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
With the Rangers already loaded with depth at wing, including players like Will Cuylle, Jimmy Vesey, and Matt Rempe, it remains to be seen how Erne might fit into their lineup. Additionally, the team is tight on cap space, with 46 out of 50 contracts signed and just under $700,000 available.
