Georgia Prepares for Physical Clash with Kentucky in SEC Opener
Head coach Kirby Smart spoke to the media Tuesday evening at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, previewing Georgia’s upcoming SEC opener against the Kentucky Wildcats.
Smart emphasized the word “physical” when describing Kentucky, noting the Wildcats’ punishing style of play. He highlighted that in last week’s game against South Carolina, Kentucky ran the ball 18 consecutive times—something he hadn’t seen “in a long time.” Over the years, the Georgia-Kentucky matchup has consistently been one of the most physical contests on Georgia’s schedule. If Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops opts for a similar strategy this weekend, fans could witness another low-scoring, hard-fought battle, much like previous meetings in Lexington.
However, Kentucky may face more resistance on the ground against Georgia, as the Bulldogs’ defense has allowed an average of just 81 rushing yards per game in the first two outings. If Smart’s defense can force Kentucky to rely on their passing game, the Wildcats could find themselves playing catch-up throughout the game.
Interestingly, this will be Georgia’s first trip to Lexington in September since the 1940s, meaning this physical challenge will test Smart’s squad earlier in the season than usual. With four games against top-ten opponents looming, this SEC opener provides a key evaluation opportunity before the Bulldogs head into a bye week, ahead of the highly anticipated Alabama showdown.
