Former Bills Starter Sends Strong Message to Josh Allen Ahead of TNF
The Buffalo Bills made several roster cuts this offseason, parting ways with key veterans, including longtime safety Jordan Poyer. After seven seasons in Buffalo, Poyer joined the Bills’ AFC East rivals, the Miami Dolphins. The 33-year-old safety, who played alongside Bills quarterback Josh Allen since Allen’s 2018 arrival, will face his former team for the first time in Week 2.
Before the Thursday Night Football matchup, Poyer made it clear he won’t hold back against Allen or the Bills. “We’re going to be ready to play,” Poyer told reporters on September 9. “We’re excited; it’s going to be a fun game.”
Poyer, now with inside knowledge of Allen’s playing style, shared some insights with his Dolphins teammates but kept specific details private. “Yeah, I’ll keep those within the team,” he said. After Allen’s impressive Week 1 performance, where he threw for 242 yards, two touchdowns, and added two rushing scores in a 34-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Poyer knows it won’t be easy to contain him.
“He went pretty crazy, doing what he always does—running, throwing, hurdling over people,” Poyer said. “He’s a great player. I’ve seen him do some wild things over the years, so I’m excited for my first chance to finally play against him. It’ll be a fun night.”
Allen, speaking to reporters on September 10, also had high praise for Poyer. “I’ve got a lot of love for him… it’s gonna be fun,” Allen said. He acknowledged the friendly competition, saying, “There’ll be some friendly jabs, but I’m hoping he doesn’t tackle me… or worse. He’s one of the best ever to wear a Bills uniform.”
Despite Poyer’s departure from Buffalo, he expressed no hard feelings toward his former team, saying, “I still have a lot of good relationships over there. I’m thankful for all my years in Buffalo.”
Allen holds a strong 10-2 career record against Miami, throwing for 3,363 yards and 38 total touchdowns over 12 games from 2018 to 2023. Although Allen sustained an injury to his non-throwing hand in Week 1, he was a full participant in practice and is set to start Thursday.
Poyer, after being released by the Bills to save $5.72 million against the 2024 cap, signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Miami. Despite concerns about his roster spot, Poyer proved crucial in Week 1, recording six tackles during Miami’s 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
