Four New York Rangers Under the Most Pressure This Season
As the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, the New York Rangers are once again chasing their first Stanley Cup in 31 years. After reaching the Eastern Conference finals last season— and in two of the last three years— the team still hasn’t made it over the hump. With this season likely being the last chance for the current core to win together, the pressure is higher than ever, especially for these four players.
Jacob Trouba
Following an offseason filled with trade rumors, Jacob Trouba returns as the Rangers’ captain for a third season. Trouba’s late-season injury last year led to a drop in performance, eventually landing him on the third defensive pairing during the playoffs. This season, he’ll need to rebound, particularly in his role alongside Zac Jones, who’s getting his first extended NHL minutes. If Trouba struggles again, this could be his last season with the team due to looming cap concerns.
Mika Zibanejad
After a subpar 2023-24 season, Mika Zibanejad faces growing criticism. His goal tally dropped from 39 in 2022-23 to just 26 last season, and he struggled in the playoffs, going 10 games without a goal in the Eastern Conference finals. Zibanejad needs to rediscover his scoring touch and provide more offense as the Rangers’ top center, or his future with the team could come under scrutiny.
Kaapo Kakko
Many expected Kaapo Kakko to be traded this offseason after failing to reach his potential. Despite showing promise in 2022-23, Kakko regressed last season with just 13 goals and 19 points. Now on a one-year “prove-it” contract, Kakko needs to step up offensively to secure a longer-term role with the Rangers.
Artemi Panarin
Though a surprise pick for this list, Artemi Panarin still faces significant pressure. He’ll need to build on last season’s success, where he was a 40-goal, 100-point player. Panarin’s chemistry with Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere will be key, especially if Zibanejad continues to struggle. Panarin must drive the offense for the Rangers to stay competitive.
With the team’s Stanley Cup aspirations riding on this season, these four players must deliver under the pressure if the Rangers hope to succeed.
