Dodgers prospect Thayron Liranzo, who was part of the trade that sent Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles, has been thriving with the Detroit Tigers’ Single-A affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps. Since the trade, Liranzo has impressed the Tigers with his hitting skills. The 21-year-old catcher was surprised when he received the call about the trade, which also involved Triple-A shortstop Trey Sweeney heading to Detroit. Despite the shock, Liranzo quickly adjusted to his new team.
Liranzo is a switch-hitting catcher who can also play first base, though his standout performance at the plate is what’s drawing attention. Tigers president Scott Harris praised Liranzo’s ability to make powerful contact from both sides, noting his disciplined approach and knack for driving the ball when he gets his pitch.

Originally a third baseman, Liranzo’s transition to catcher was suggested by Fernando Tatis Sr. The Dodgers signed him during the international signing period when he was just 16, after spotting him at Tatis’ academy. Since joining the Tigers, Liranzo has quickly risen to become their No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Harris believes Liranzo has the potential to develop into a top-tier catcher and fill a key role for the Tigers.
