GOOD NEWS: Rangers land another long awaited deal of a top veteran

Marc Staal Retires, Joins Rangers as Player Development Assistant

Defenseman  Marc Staal announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday after 17 seasons and has joined the New York Rangers as a player development assistant. In his new role, Staal will focus on mentoring defensemen throughout the organization. His retirement follows just a month after his older brother,  Eric Staal, also retired after 18 NHL seasons.

Staal, 37, spent the first 13 years of his career with the Rangers, who selected him 12th overall in the 2005 NHL Draft. His 892 games with the Rangers rank sixth in franchise history, behind only Hall of Famers Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Rod Gilbert, as well as Ron Greschner and Walt Tkaczuk.

The Rangers celebrated Staal’s career, posting, “Congratulations Marc on a great career! Thrilled to have you back and looking forward to your next chapter as #NYR Player Development Assistant.”
