Rangers’ Matt Rempe Opens Up About Declining Fight with Tom Wilson
New York Rangers forward **Matt Rempe**, set to enter his second NHL season and his first full one with the Rangers, recently reflected on his on-ice experiences, including his decision to turn down a fight with Washington Capitals’ enforcer **Tom Wilson** during the 2024 playoffs. Speaking at the NHLPA rookie showcase on September 4, Rempe explained why he declined Wilson’s challenge in the first-round playoff series.
Wilson approached Rempe for a fight, but the 6-foot-9 forward chose to pass on the opportunity. Rempe cited strategic reasons, considering the Rangers were leading 2-0 in the series and ahead in the game. “In that scenario, we’re up 2–0 in the series and we’re up in that game, in Washington’s barn. There’s no benefit for me taking that fight,” Rempe said. “I think that’s just trying to grow and be smarter.”
Rempe’s decision surprised many, especially since he had racked up 71 penalty minutes in just 17 regular-season games as a rookie, quickly becoming a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden. At the NHLPA camp, Rempe emphasized his desire to improve his overall skill set rather than just focus on fighting. “Fighting is a very small part. I highly prioritize the skills, the skating, and everything. I’ve got to become a better player,” Rempe said.

Although some have criticized him for fighting too often, Rempe rejected the notion that he’s only looking for physical altercations. “No, not at all,” he said. “You’ve got to think that I’m 21 years old in the NHL, and I have legends like Matt Martin and Nicolas Deslauriers who want to fight. I’m in no position to say ‘no’ there.”
Heading into his second season, Rempe’s goal is to secure a regular spot in the Rangers’ bottom six forwards. He is projected to start the season as the right winger on the fourth line, according to **Daily Faceoff**.
