Tigers Injury Update: Reese Olson Starts Rehab, Javier Baez Undergoes Surgery
Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Reese Olson is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday night. It remains uncertain how long Olson will need in Toledo, but if he requires two starts with the Mud Hens, he could rejoin the Tigers by September 15 and make three starts before the season ends.
Alternatively, the Tigers might use Olson even if he isn’t fully stretched out, possibly having him pitch three to four innings following an opener. Olson, who has been sidelined since July 21 due to a right shoulder strain, has already thrown several bullpen sessions and completed a live batting practice in Detroit.
Olson will be joined in Toledo by outfielder Wenceel Perez, who began his rehab assignment on Monday. Both players are pushing to return before the season concludes.
In other injury updates, the Tigers announced that shortstop Javier Baez successfully underwent right hip arthroscopy on Tuesday. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, this procedure involves using a small camera to look inside the hip joint and can be used to clean out damaged tissue, repair tears, or reshape bones.

It’s uncertain whether Baez will be ready for spring training, as recovery from the procedure can take several months. The Tigers’ full injury report, released twice weekly, is available below.
