Florida head coach Billy Napier has made a significant change amid growing rumors about his job security. After a humiliating 24-point loss to the No. 19 Miami Hurricanes, pressure has mounted on Napier, with fans calling for his dismissal.
Florida’s upcoming schedule doesn’t offer many promising matchups, except for their Week 2 game against Samford. Napier announced a major adjustment for the game: freshman five-star quarterback DJ Lagway will replace Graham Mertz, who is in concussion protocol after taking a hard hit against Miami.
Napier, speaking during the SEC’s weekly teleconference, praised Lagway, who is one of the highest-ranked quarterbacks in Florida’s history.
“DJ’s got a great attitude,” Napier said. “He’s excited for the opportunity to play and has been performing well in practice. It’s great to see his teammates rally around him.” Lagway saw limited playtime against Miami, completing 3 of 6 passes for 31 yards and an interception, but he led Florida’s only scoring drive in the second half. This upcoming game against Samford, who lost their opener to West Georgia, offers Lagway a chance to gain valuable experience.
