Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper exited Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to an elbow injury after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. The 92.9 mph fastball from Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis struck Harper on his left elbow during his third pitch at-bat. The Phillies announced that Harper suffered a left elbow contusion and will undergo further evaluation. Edmundo Sosa replaced him in the third inning.
Recently, Harper mentioned to MLB.com that he had been playing through discomfort in his wrist and elbow. On Tuesday, he was seen in pain after a swing against Toronto but returned to the lineup the following day. Phillies manager Rob Thomson had previously stated that Harper was “fine” and no rest was planned.
Harper has a history of elbow issues, including undergoing Tommy John surgery before the 2023 season, though he made a remarkably fast recovery. This season, Harper earned his eighth MLB All-Star selection, as the Phillies push to win their first NL East title since 2011. They entered Wednesday’s game with an 82-56 record and a seven-game lead over the Atlanta Braves.
