The Detroit Lions will enter the 2024 season with a target on their back, a position they haven’t been accustomed to in recent years. After making history last season by winning the NFC North and hosting (and winning) an NFL Playoff game, the Lions are looking to continue their success.
The 33rd Team outlined several “win-win” scenarios for NFL teams, including the Lions moving on from Jameson Williams. One suggestion is that instead of Davante Adams joining the Jets, he would be a better fit with the Lions, who are seen as America’s team right now. Pairing Adams with Detroit’s exciting offense could bolster their chances for a Super Bowl run, especially since their current WR2 situation isn’t ideal. Despite his age, Adams has maintained elite performance, posting four consecutive 1,100-yard and eight-plus touchdown seasons, even with the Raiders.
Financially, the Lions are in a position to take on Adams’ $16 million base salary, with room to restructure his contract, which has no guaranteed money beyond this season. For the Raiders, trading Adams would clear $17.5 million in 2024 and over $36 million in 2025 and 2026. A potential trade involving Jameson Williams could make this deal appealing for both teams, especially if the Raiders are not competitive by the trade deadline. However, this scenario is truly a “win-win” only if the Lions win the Super Bowl with Adams; otherwise, they risk trading away the 23-year-old Williams for a 32-year-old Adams without the ultimate payoff.
