Breaking News: Virginia Tech Rival Announces A Surprising Starting QB

Virginia’s head coach Tony Elliott announced the starting quarterback for the 2024 season. Last year, Virginia Tech needed a win against Virginia in Charlottesville during Thanksgiving Weekend to secure bowl eligibility. A week before the game, and after Virginia’s 30-27 upset over Duke at home, quarterback Anthony Colandrea gave Virginia Tech some bulletin board material.

Following the win against the Blue Devils, Colandrea confidently stated, “After this game versus Tech, after we beat Virginia Tech, this program is going to shoot up and everyone in the country is going to know about us.” Unfortunately for Colandrea and his teammates, things didn’t pan out that way.

Virginia Tech visited Charlottesville and dominated early, cruising to a 55-17 victory in the Commonwealth Clash, finishing the season 6-6 before securing a bowl win over Tulane. Heading into summer camp, Colandrea and Tony Muskett were in a competition for the starting quarterback position, and head coach Tony Elliott made his decision on Saturday. As reported by Jacquie Franciulli of 247Sports, Elliott named Colandrea as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, a somewhat unexpected choice. Colandrea will take the field for the Cavaliers’ season-opener against Richmond.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech and Virginia won’t face off until Thanksgiving Weekend in Blacksburg, with 11 games and two bye weeks before that matchup. A lot can change between now and then. This decision is crucial for Elliott, who is under pressure to improve on the three-win season from 2023 and either reach bowl eligibility or get to at least five wins to satisfy the fanbase. It’s a challenging task, but Elliott will begin the season with Colandrea at quarterback.
