The Detroit Lions have been advised to consider signing a veteran safety, particularly former Super Bowl champion Jalen Mills, to strengthen their roster ahead of the season. While the Lions have made significant improvements across various positions during the offseason and have finalized their initial 2024 roster, there may still be some gaps, especially in the defensive backfield.
Despite the additions made through free agency and the draft, some believe the secondary could benefit from further reinforcement. Bleacher Report highlighted the defensive backfield as the Lions’ biggest weakness and suggested Mills as a potential solution. Mills, who previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and briefly with the New York Giants, offers versatility as he can cover both the boundary and the slot, and play safety when needed. His performance last season, with a passer rating of 73.5 when targeted, would be a valuable asset to the Lions’ defense.
With Ifeatu Melifonwu possibly sidelined for multiple weeks due to injury, Mills could fill the void. Additionally, Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell noted the team’s decision to leave a roster spot open before the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, emphasizing the need for flexibility in potentially making a late addition to the roster. If the Lions’ defense requires reinforcement in the coming days, Mills could be a strong candidate.
