Miami quarterback Cam Ward had some fun at the expense of Florida fans following the Hurricanes’ dominant 41-17 victory over the Gators in Week 1 of the 2024 season. The No. 19 Hurricanes kicked off their campaign in spectacular fashion, delivering a comprehensive thrashing of their rivals in The Swamp, in front of a large crowd of Florida fans and a significant number of Gator recruits.
It’s no surprise that Miami is savoring this significant win, and Ward, in particular, took the opportunity to poke fun at the Florida crowd. After an impressive performance where he threw for 385 yards, three touchdowns, and completed 74% of his passes, Ward mocked the timing of the Gators fans’ noise during the game.
“Some advice to the fans,” Ward said in his postgame press conference. “If you’re going to be loud, you have to be loud when we’re huddling. Can’t just be loud once we break the huddle. By that time, there’s no point. We hear the play. We communicated already. But it was a good atmosphere to play in.”
These comments are likely to stick with Gator fans for some time. However, as the saying goes, “to the victor go the spoils,” and Ward certainly earned the right to talk a little trash after his stellar performance.
Ward, a two-time transfer who played at Washington State last season, is a crucial player in Miami’s hopes for contention this year. And based on his Week 1 performance, he’s off to a promising start.
