The Dallas Cowboys are bringing back a veteran player who was unexpectedly cut on Tuesday. The Cowboys have experienced a busy offseason filled with numerous storylines and distractions but are now focused on the upcoming 2024 season.
On August 27, NFL teams were required to reduce their rosters to 53 players by 3 p.m. CT, which resulted in some surprising cuts. However, Dallas has decided to re-sign a defender they released earlier in the week.
According to Jon Machota, the Cowboys are re-signing defensive end Carl Lawson to their practice squad. Lawson originally joined the team on August 19 with a one-year contract but failed to make the initial 53-man roster. Despite this, the Cowboys are still interested in keeping him around, and there’s a possibility he could eventually make it to the active roster, though he might need some time to get fully up to speed.
Dallas has been seeking additional pass-rushing support since Sam Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. While Lawson may not be at the peak of his earlier career form, he still has the ability to generate pressure off the edge. After tearing his Achilles with the New York Jets in 2021 and undergoing two surgeries, Lawson’s explosiveness has diminished, but he remains effective at creating backfield pressure.
Throughout his six-year NFL career with the Jets and Cincinnati Bengals, Lawson has accumulated 119 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 27 sacks. At 29 years old, he still needs to impress the coaching staff to secure a spot on the 53-man roster, but rejoining the team is a positive step after his unexpected release on Tuesday.
