Former Dodger Jason Heyward is reportedly signing with the Houston Astros, just a day after becoming a free agent. Heyward, who was recently designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers, cleared waivers and became a free agent on Monday. According to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart, the veteran outfielder will now join the American League contenders, five days after being released by the Dodgers.
Heyward’s departure from the Dodgers came shortly after hitting a clutch pinch-hit three-run homer that secured a win against the Seattle Mariners. However, with Chris Taylor returning from injury and the Dodgers’ lineup stabilizing with Mookie Betts and Max Muncy back, there was no longer room for Heyward on the roster.
Heyward initially joined the Dodgers on a minor league deal in December 2022, making the Opening Day roster in 2023. He played 124 games that season, posting a .269/.340/.473 slash line with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs, earning the Roy Campanella Award for being the team’s most inspiring player. He re-signed with the Dodgers on a one-year, $9 million contract for the 2024 season, during which he appeared in 63 games, hitting .208/.289/.393 with six home runs and 28 RBIs. Despite some injuries, including a knee bone bruise, Heyward remained a valuable asset when called upon.
The 35-year-old Heyward now joins a Houston Astros team leading the AL West with a 70-61 record and aiming for another postseason run. The Astros, who won the World Series in 2022, have been a perennial contender, making the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons. While the Astros’ 2017 World Series victory over the Dodgers remains controversial due to the sign-stealing scandal, Heyward now has the opportunity to contribute to the Astros’ success as they push for another championship, with the Dodgers covering most of his salary.
