ESPN’s Paul Finebaum has been outspoken against the ACC this summer, with Virginia Tech being his latest target. Finebaum, who has been critical of Florida State recently, took to ESPN’s Get Up to express his discontent with a 12-team College Football Playoff bracket presented by Matt Barrie. The bracket included Georgia, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Penn State, Missouri, Utah, and Memphis.
Finebaum took particular issue with Virginia Tech’s inclusion, calling the field “fairly embarrassing” and questioning Barrie’s judgment. He suggested that Barrie’s choice might be influenced by a desire to impress Virginia Tech.
As the 2024 season approaches, Finebaum’s criticism highlights that Virginia Tech is not expected to be a CFP contender. Despite having a manageable schedule, the Hokies face a challenging path and are considered unlikely to make it to the ACC Championship Game. Finebaum’s critique puts Virginia Tech in the same critical spotlight as Florida State, as both programs face skepticism from the ESPN commentator.
