JUST IN: Virginia Tech completes a deal of a high rated veteran transfer

Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young has successfully completed his roster rebuild for the 2024-25 season with the addition of a veteran transfer. The Hokies finalized their team on Friday by bringing in a transfer from Eastern Michigan. Young, who has witnessed a lot throughout his coaching career, wasn’t prepared for the mass departure of players following the NIT loss to Ohio State in March. Although it was anticipated that some players might enter the transfer portal, several departures were unexpected.

This spring, Young and his coaching staff faced the challenge of rebuilding the team. The roster was almost complete a few months ago, but one spot remained vacant. With 14 players already participating in summer workouts, Virginia Tech secured their final roster spot for the 2024-25 season by adding a transfer from Eastern Michigan.

Connor Serven, who started his collegiate career at Illinois before transferring to Eastern Michigan, is the final addition to the Hokies’ roster. He has two years of eligibility remaining, according to Virginia Tech. “We are thrilled to have Connor join our program. He brings experience, intelligence, and versatility, and he plays hard with a high skill level – exactly the kind of player we look for. We’re eager to continue his development,” said Mike Young.

Last season, Serven averaged 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game for Eastern Michigan. The 6-foot-8 forward will join a frontcourt that includes transfers Ben Burnham from the College of Charleston, Tobi Lawal from VCU, incoming freshman Ryan Jones, and returning senior Mylyjael Poteat. The Hokies are set to begin their season on November 4 at Cassell Coliseum against Delaware State.
