BREAKIN NEWS: Former Texas best QB commit to Duke Blue Devils

Former Texas QB Maalik Murphy Named Duke’s Starting Quarterback

Maalik Murphy has been named the starting quarterback for Duke’s season opener against the Elon Phoenix, as announced by Blue Devils head coach Manny Diaz. Murphy, who transferred from Texas, was selected over sophomore Grayson Loftis, who had five starts for Duke last season.

The decision to start Murphy was anticipated after his presence at ACC Media Days last month. Diaz praised Murphy’s dedication and performance, stating, “Maalik has earned the chance to be our starting quarterback through his preparation, work ethic, and productivity. I’m thrilled for him due to his commitment to this team and program.”

Murphy, a 6’5″, 238-pound quarterback, started two games for the Longhorns last season before transferring. He outperformed Loftis, a South Carolina native and consensus three-star recruit in the 2023 class. Loftis threw for 823 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions in five games, stepping in for the injured Riley Leonard.

At Texas, Murphy appeared in seven games last season, completing 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He showcased both potential and areas for improvement, including the need for better decision-making and poise.

Murphy, who joined Texas in the 2022 recruiting class after Steve Sarkisian’s hiring, was a highly sought-after prospect with over 30 offers. He was ranked as the No. 179 overall prospect and the No. 12 quarterback by 247Sports Composite.

Murphy’s strong arm, charismatic personality, and commitment to the program made him a fan favorite at Texas and have now earned him the starting role at Duke.
