Good News: Four-Star Defensive Back Flips From Texas To LSU Tigers

Four-star defensive back Kade Phillips has switched his commitment from Texas to LSU. Just about six weeks after initially choosing the Texas Longhorns over the LSU Tigers, the Fort Bend Hightower standout flipped to LSU on Sunday, marking a significant blow to Texas’ 2025 recruiting class for the secondary.

“When I committed to Texas, it was because of the opportunities they offered,” Phillips previously told On3. “Being in Austin, surrounded by success, and the versatility they saw in me, made Texas appealing. I liked how they envisioned me in multiple roles, which could get me on the field quickly. Plus, the family atmosphere from the entire UT staff, including coach Steve Sarkisian, was a big factor. They were constantly in touch with me.”

However, LSU’s defensive backs coach Corey Raymond’s persistent efforts paid off in the end.

“LSU never stopped recruiting me, even after I committed to Texas,” Phillips told On3. “They kept reaching out almost daily, staying locked in with me even after my commitment.”

Phillips is now the second player from Texas’ 2025 class to flip to LSU, following Melbourne (Fla.) Eau Gallie defensive tackle Brandon Brown. This leaves Texas with just one defensive back commit for the 2025 class — Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Caleb Chester, who is the lowest-rated of Texas’ 16 commits. This represents another setback for Texas coaches Terry Joseph and Blake Gideon, despite the team’s success last season and the upcoming move to the SEC.

Texas, however, has a chance to recover with decisions from Ruston (La.) cornerback Aiden Anding, who is set to announce on August 24, and Galveston Ball’s Jonah Williams, a five-star prospect recruited by Texas as a safety.
