NHL Rumors: Calgary Flames Defenseman Update. As we approach September and the start of training camp, NHL rumors continue to swirl, even in the offseason. All rumors originate from original sources and are subject to change.

Is a Calgary Flames Blueliner on the Move? Analysis: Rasmus Andersson appears to be the last remaining defenseman from a group that once included Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov, and Oliver Kylington. The 27-year-old has consistently been around the 50-point mark in recent seasons and could attract interest from other teams.

Flames General Manager Craig Conroy has been reshaping the roster as part of the team’s retooling efforts. While there was speculation of a trade around the time of the NHL Draft, any deal would only happen if the right opportunity arose.

According to McKenzie, Calgary’s tradeable assets are limited at this point. Players like Nazem Kadri, who wants to stay and is 34 years old, and Jonathan Huberdeau, with his burdensome contract, are not easy to move. This leaves Andersson as a potentially attractive asset. He’s seen as a viable top-four defenseman, though his value will depend on his performance, as McKenzie mentioned. The Malmo, Sweden native has had strong seasons in Alberta and remains valuable, especially with the defensive core in transition.

One advantage for Andersson is his affordable contract, with a $4.55 million cap hit through the 2025-26 season. This is a manageable hit for contending teams.

However, Conroy will need a significant offer to consider a trade. McKenzie suggested it would take something like a high draft pick and a quality prospect to make it happen.

Time on Calgary’s Side. Conroy doesn’t need to rush into trading Andersson. He can take a patient approach, similar to how the Montreal Canadiens handled David Savard. Some expected Savard to be traded by the last deadline, but the Canadiens chose to wait.

If Andersson has a strong season like he did two years ago, a trade market could emerge, making it difficult for Conroy to ignore.

Ultimately, Andersson’s performance will determine if a team is willing to pay a high price for him, but for now, the Calgary Flames have time on their side.
