The Atlanta Braves face another major blow as third baseman Austin Riley is set to miss 6-8 weeks due to a broken hand. Already dealing with numerous injuries, the Braves received more bad news on Monday when it was confirmed that Riley, who was hit by a 97 mph fastball from Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jack Kochanowicz during Sunday’s 3-1 victory, suffered a fractured right hand. An MRI confirmed the injury, sidelining Riley for the rest of the regular season and potentially part of the playoffs if the Braves qualify.
Currently two games ahead of the New York Mets for the final wild-card spot, the Braves are struggling to keep their playoff hopes alive amidst a string of injuries. The team, which has won the NL East for six consecutive years, is now seven games behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies. With their division streak in jeopardy, the Braves are now focusing on securing a wild-card spot.
In addition to Riley, the Braves have already lost NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. and ace pitcher Spencer Strider to season-ending injuries. Other key players, such as second baseman Ozzie Albies, center fielder Michael Harris II, and catcher Sean Murphy, have also missed significant time this season.
This marks Riley’s second significant injury of the year, having previously missed two weeks in May with a strained muscle near his rib cage. His absence leaves a considerable void in the Braves’ lineup. With the trade deadline already passed, the team has limited options for replacement. Luke Williams, who has struggled offensively this season, temporarily filled in at third base after Riley’s injury. The Braves may consider shifting Whit Merrifield from second base to third and giving top prospect Nacho Alvarez an opportunity to step up.
