New York Mets insider reveals a surprisingly realistic strategy to acquire impact pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and David Robertson soon.
Could the New York Mets secure top-tier pitchers like Nathan Eovaldi or David Robertson just weeks after the MLB trade deadline? A team insider has recently outlined a feasible approach and the benefits the Mets have in making these significant August acquisitions. The Mets are currently in a slump as they enter today’s MLB games. Despite emerging as one of the league’s stronger teams before the July 31 trade deadline, they have struggled in recent weeks. A surprising four-game losing streak has knocked them out of the Wild Card positions they were in at the start of the month.
For much of the season, the Mets’ low-cost starting rotation was a consistent strength, even as their batting lineup remained erratic. However, their recent struggles have revealed some vulnerabilities, raising concerns after the team worked so hard to climb out of an early-season slump and re-enter playoff contention.
Yet, there may still be a post-deadline opportunity for New York to strengthen their rotation and get crucial bullpen support. On Tuesday, SNY MLB insider Andy Martino shared that a league executive believes the Mets are well-positioned to make moves in August, primarily through the waiver wire. This week, The Athletic’s MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the Texas Rangers might look to save money in the second half by placing pitchers Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney, David Robertson, Kirby Yates, and Jose Leclerc on waivers. Martino explained why the Mets have an advantage in acquiring some of these pitchers. “The Mets front office is already considering the two advantages they hold in adding talent this way: their win/loss record and financial resources. Waiver claims are awarded in reverse order of teams’ records, and right now, the Mets would have the first shot at players compared to Wild Card rivals like Atlanta, San Diego, and Arizona. The Giants and Cardinals are currently ahead of the Mets for this less-than-desirable spot.”
Of course, this order can change quickly, but the key point is that if the Mets continue to perform as they have, they could be well-positioned to capitalize if other teams drop out of contention and use the waiver process to cut costs. Martino also noted that the team is always willing to spend on minor moves, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them make a push before the August 31 waiver deadline to secure a playoff spot. Eovaldi has had another strong season, earning All-Star recognition with the World Series-winning Rangers in 2023. Robertson, who pitched for New York last year, has also been effective for Texas this season.
