The Philadelphia Phillies may have a potential replacement for Garrett Stubbs right in front of them. Stubbs, the backup catcher known for his upbeat personality and DJ skills in the clubhouse, has been a fan favorite, but his on-field performance has not matched his positive vibes. Despite having a solid first season with the Phillies in 2022, his production has declined significantly in 2023, with a batting line of .191/.289/.237 and just one home run.
Elias Díaz
The Phillies now have the option to pursue Elias Díaz, a veteran catcher recently placed on waivers by the Colorado Rockies. Díaz, a 33-year-old All-Star and MVP of last year’s All-Star Game, could be a better option for the Phillies as they head into the final stretch of the season and playoffs. However, it’s uncertain whether the Phillies will make a move for Díaz, given their previous decision to retain Stubbs over Rafael Marchán earlier this season. Nonetheless, the opportunity to upgrade their backup catcher position is there for the taking.
