BREAKING: Florida Gators announces the departure of another top defensive contributor

Florida suffers a major setback with the loss of a key defensive player for the season. There’s nothing more painful than losing a player to injury during fall camp, and unfortunately, that’s exactly what the Florida Gators are facing after a significant injury occurred over the weekend.

Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Jamari Lyons sustained an injury during Florida’s first fall scrimmage on Saturday. Head coach Billy Napier confirmed on Monday that Lyons will miss the entire season.

“Jamari Lyons broke his ankle, and he’ll be out for the season. Our thoughts and prayers are with him,” Napier said, according to On3.

Napier added, “We had all 132 players there to support him as he was carried off the field. That shows that these guys are building something special, that there’s a strong connection among them.”

Injuries are always tough, but it’s particularly devastating when they happen in a scrimmage. This injury will impact Florida on the field in 2024 and potentially even into 2025, as Lyons was set to be the backup nose tackle behind senior Cam Jackson.

Lyons, a former four-star recruit, played in all 12 games last season for the Gators, starting in one. He recorded 20 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
