New York Media Trying to Push Juan Soto Away from the Yankees

The best way the Yankees can convince Juan Soto to stay in the Bronx long-term is by winning, and winning big. I’m not just talking about making the AL playoffs—how about a World Series run? Even an appearance in the ALCS might be enough to convince him.

Soto has proven to be the ideal partner for Aaron Judge in the lineup this season. The combination of Judge and Soto should keep the Yankees competitive for years. Soto is everything Brian Cashman hoped Giancarlo Stanton would be, and more. However, every contending team with money would love to have a player like Soto, making the Yankees’ upcoming free-agent pursuit of him all the more daunting. Similar to Judge, who was pursued by nearly every team on the West Coast due to his California roots, Cashman needs to make a pitch that sets the Yankees apart from the competition. For Judge, they offered the captaincy. For Soto, they’ll need to come up with something equally compelling.

Unfortunately, stories like this one from the New York Post aren’t helping: “Yankees Should Sacrifice Their Soul and More to Keep Juan Soto.”

No offense to Clay Holmes, but he doesn’t come close to Soto in terms of importance to the Yankees roster. Holmes is a solid relief pitcher, but the Yankees could easily find another closer, whether by purchase, luck, or even from their “Quad-A” farm system—the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I’m not a Yankees fan, but even I can see the irony in that headline. Sure, the Yankees could re-sign everyone except Soto, but doing so would likely cost them around 10 wins, turning them from potential division champions to, at best, the third AL Wild Card team.

Adding to the pressure is the possibility that if Soto leaves the Bronx, he might join the Yankees’ cross-town rivals, the New York Mets. Steve Cohen and his team have been eyeing Soto for quite some time, which will only drive up his asking price. Given the circumstances, Cashman should be prepared to offer Soto whatever it takes to keep him.
